Hybrid Instruction

Hybrid instruction combines traditional face-to-face instruction with elements of online learning. Learners spend a portion of time in a classroom setting and a portion of time working online. Benefits of hybrid instruction include:

  • Face-to-Face Interaction – Learners develop rapport and supportive relationships with instructors and peers.

  • Flexibility – Learners may complete online components wherever they have a secure internet connection. Online learning components may be repurposed again and again.

  • Engagement – Learners are engaged with “active learning” online through discussion boards, interactive group projects, tutorials, and assessments.

  • Skill Development – Face-to face instruction facilitates team building, role play, and kinesthetic learning, while the online component encourages self-direction, time management, and critical thinking.

Hybrid instruction requires careful planning of different types and levels of interaction. Learner characteristics must be balanced with content, objectives, and technology to ensure a quality learning experience.
